Do you know your woods?

do you know your woods

Here at NGrava we believe that it is important for you to learn about wood types, especially about the ones that we use for our cutting boards. Maple, cherry and walnut are three species which we love to engrave on because of their different qualities. They are rather different from one another which makes your choice even harder!

Maple

Maple is a light-coloured wood that is very popular in North America, especially is Canada for its syrup. This wood is easy to work with by hand and with machinery. It does burn easily making it a great wood for a personalized engraving. It is one of the hardest wood species. Maple wood stains very well for a darker look, but we like its natural creamy feel.

Cherry

Cherry wood has a light red-brown finish. It can be polished to many other tints. This wood is hard and strong which is why we recommend it for tough cutting. This wood is easy to carve leaving a lasting finish to all laser engravings.

Walnut

Walnut is a very versatile type of wood. It is used fairly often in kitchen décor such as cabinets and furniture. Our walnut boards are a dark chocolate brown that comes from the centre of the tree itself. This dark wood is strong and durable. Its colour is perfect for a dramatic touch in your home. It doesn’t stain as easily as a light wood.

A Little Addition

We are slowly adding pine wood to our large collection. For now, it is only offered for some coaster models. This soft light wood resist shrinking and swelling which is rare. For a rustic feel, this type of wood is perfect. It is also known for its beautiful knots which adds more texture to the wood.

Our wood cutting boards come from North America and are engraved in Quebec. We are fair believers in local products and treat wood with respect.
